I’m so tired. Sheep are counting me.

I’m not sure if it was Mark Zuckerberg still being richer than God after Meta lost billions attempting to make the Matrix happen, Elon Musk purchasing Twitter so he could realize his dream of an “everything app” we never leave, or Donald Trump requesting TikTok be banned during his first term, only to swoop in and be its savior in an effort to bolster his popularity before his second started. I’m so tired of hearing about the escapades of tech billionaires and their presidential orange friend. These people who would like to not be held responsible for the veracity of the information on their platform or its effects on the people using the platform. The tech bro billionaires who will spend millions to get a president elected because it presents a favorable business environment for them. Somewhere the joy I used to have in connecting and sharing on social media died.

Despite my fatigue, social media still feels like a necessity. Networking is a large part of the work of playing in bands. The majority of shows I’ve booked since 2007 have started as a message on Facebook, Instagram, or MySpace (RIP). Likewise, Facebook and Instagram are useful platforms to promote my work as an audio engineer and make it easy for potential clients to contact me. Leaving entirely feels like a bad business decision, but what if there was a way to minimize my time on those platforms, share information I hope is useful, and keep anyone who is interested up to date on my life, the studio, and my musical endeavors? Bonus points if it’s contributing less to the further enrichment of Musk and Co. The more I thought about it, the more a personal blog made the most sense.

The main benefit of a blog is that the content is mine, I can export it and take it with me to other blogging platforms. It’s also not subject to the whims of an algorithm. My reach will likely be much smaller than it would be on the socials, but all the content will be here in chronological order and with tags making it easy for whomever happens upon my site to read it. I won’t be subsidizing my blog with advertising, and I won’t be collecting your data. It’s also an opportunity to create a curated space. You won’t see my posts smashed between amateur comedians, the horrors of war, and five quick and easy weeknight dinner recipes.

I’ll mostly be posting about audio stuff with a few life updates interspersed. I’ll post news, talk about new to me gear, share multitracks from sessions when I can, and tell you about music I’m working on. I’m looking forward to having my own little corner of the internet free of what exhausts/infuriates/bums me out on social media.

The title of this post was inspired by the saddest Fugazi song. Unfortunately I don’t know how to share it with you ad free.
